project description:Performing Arts/Classroom Building- location: 17 Duffy Tce, Woodvale
- contract source: Tender
prominent
design feature: The St.
Lukes Performing Arts Centre and Visual Arts building complex is formed by two
main separate buildings that house their separate functions individually.
Externally the building finishes include a composition of exposed structural
steel, multi-coloured vertical cladding panels and sand/cement rendered with
wave painted walls. The roof is formed with colorbond roof sheeting. The
materials themselves are simple, however composition of colour to the splayed
walls and the oval, circular and offset rectilinear windows gel to form an
impressive and interesting finish.
An
outdoor performance area and stage is cleverly set between the Performing Arts
Building and the Visual Arts Building. Ground finishes between the buildings
are in the form of varying colours and textures of soft-fall ‘tiger turf’ with
a 35mm pile and the area also incorporates an elevated stage for performers.
The
ground floor of the main building is set more than three metres higher than the
car-park at Duffy Terrace and these are connected by winding coloured concrete
path and steps with hand seeded laterite, honed and acid washed. Interlocking
‘BGC Decopave’ pavers set in a diagonal pattern with multiple colours, bound by
a header course provides a level and smooth finish the main terrace areas
immediately outside the buildings. The plant selection utilizes native trees
and shrubs intended to form a ‘desert landscape’ in order to reduce water
quantities used for irrigation.
Internally,
evidence of quality is immediately noticeable as the level of finish achieved
by Gavin Construction is impeccable through all materials including the
stainless steel bench-tops to the canteen areas, timber flooring, acoustic
ceilings formed with aluminium mini-strips and the installation of interactive digital
whiteboards.
construction
features: The
external materials of both buildings comprise vertical clad paneling, rendered
walls, exposed beams and color bond roofing.
The materials themselves are simple, however clever use of angled walls,
colored panels and render, oval, circular and offset rectangular windows
combine to make an impressive appearance.
internal
features: The internal
finishes of both buildings, are of a high quality and finish. Finishes include stainless
benches, high quality timber floors, commercial appliances, acoustic ceilings and
interactive whiteboards.
